“Time to get sexy in your own skin,” says John Galliano about this season’s trends, which will come as little consolation to the crocodiles that made up these Savannah chic bags. available in two shapes and two sizes, the bags have soft, unstructured shell-shaped skins and come in both one- and two-tone versions for that touch of tribal chic.

Elegant service and surrounds make Mango Tree the perfect date destination

By Rebecca Lo, Translation by Hsiaofen Peng

One of the most recent additions to The Shoppes at Four Seasons, the first Mango Tree to open in china sets a new standard for luxury Thai dining in the region.

The sophisticated space is all decked out with wooden screens, sumptuous fabrics and discreetly intimate lighting. While the main dining room is divided into two distinct sections, private rooms at the back of the restaurant make entertaining a large group in style a memorable feat.

We decided to try as many of the restaurant’s signature dishes – and there were quite a few to choose from. after much deliberation, we settled on the grilled free-range chicken with Thai herbs, the roast suckling pig with Thai herbs and the stir-fried crab in curry sauce. To get in some roughage, we also added a stir-fried morning glory with chilli and garlic.

Our smilingly serene waitress bowed respectfully and proceeded to chill our sparkling water in an equally sparkling ice bucket as if we’d ordered the best champagne. Then the dishes started to arrive. First up was the chicken, which was suitably tender and delicately fragrant. all dressed up with leafy décor, it was a delight for both the eyes and the palette. The suckling pig arrived next, and had a pleasant crunch to it despite being a little on the bland side. Then the highlight of the evening – a tureen of succulent crab in a mild curry sauce. ideal for pairing with rice, the sauce had the kick of chilli that complimented the crabmeat’s sweetness. and the morning glory provided a fresh counterpoint to the richness of all the other dishes.

Mango Tree is a place that won’t fail to impress, and its menu of flavours that walk the line between savoury and spicy certainly make it an ideal place to take someone worth impressing.

interview

Renowned architect Paul Steelman unveils his latest gaming gem for Macau

By Rebecca Lo, Translation by Hsiaofen Peng

How does City of Dreams offer something different?
city of Dreams will be an unbelievable addition to the Macau skyline. i have to give Lawrence Ho and James Packer credit for doing something this cutting edge. it will be a true resort with a significantly different set of price points, offering a lot of options within the same complex. Young people will love it.

How is designing casinos different to other buildings?
in casinos, people judge the place by ‘touch point’ architecture – how they are touched by emotional experiences. The place has to touch their souls and make them want to stay. Gaming is about having a good time, and there are over 2,000 touch points that we can get wrong. if the bar is at the wrong height, for example, people won’t want to sit there.

What is the most challenging part about designing in Macau today?
Many customers have Dom Pérignon tastes but beer money to spend. The casinos of yesterday were designed without a thought about return on investment. now, we’re doing smaller, more targeted, more functional spaces.

Do you incorporate feng shui principles into your Macau designs?
I’m a huge believer in feng shui. i even have a feng shui feature on my iPhone! in any culture that we design for, our clients say they want Vegas. But it isn’t really Vegas they want – it’s the feeling of Vegas. We design in a Western way, with Eastern sensibilities.

What do you think about the changes to Macau?
They have been incredible. The city is doing in 10 years what Vegas did in 30. it has an asian sexiness to it that’s unlike anywhere else in the world.
