Comforting dishes and Portuguese charm make antonio like visiting an old friend

By Rebecca Lo
Photography by Gary Mak

Tucked away on the corner of Rua dos negociantes and Rua dos Mercadores, antonio’s stately colonial façade seems somewhat incongruous with the nearby Pak Tai Temple – but juxtaposition is part of Taipa’s appeal. Behind the hand-rubbed wooden doors is the pride and joy of Portuguese chef antonio neves coelho, who opened his namesake restaurant in early 2008. immediately, we were cocooned within an elegant Portuguese home from an era long forgotten. cobalt and white ceramic tiles decorated the walls, while highback leather chairs with intricate scrollwork gave us the royal treatment as we sat down. To complete the homely atmosphere, dim lighting from delicate wall sconces set off the rustic oil paintings and dark wooden ceiling beams.

Our smiling host showed off the plump pata negra – a slowly aged leg of ham displayed on its own stand. after watching his theatrical carving, we dug into our appetiser, relishing its unmistakable blend of smoky sweetness accompanied by crunchy rolls and sangria. next came the creamy Portuguese green cabbage soup, a delicious way to enjoy a healthy dose of veggies. Then we savoured the intense kick that garlic lent to a dish of sautéed clams.

Our mains were a warming casserole of shredded dried cod, baked in a white sauce with thick chunks of potatoes that provided a hearty counterpoint to the clams. However, the african chicken was disappointing. although it looked the part and had the right amount of coconut, we found the dish a bit dry and were left wanting. To make amends, our host treated us to a shot of port to ensure our meal ended on a sweet note. a throwback to the days when relaxing over a leisurely meal in a warm environment was the norm, antonio is the perfect antidote to today’s hectic lifestyles.

interview

Ilija Karlusic, interior designer for Four Seasons Macao, reveals what inspires him

Translation by Hsiaofen Peng, Takako Whilden

What is the creative concept behind the design for the Four Seasons Macao?
The public flow space and lobby was inspired by Portugal’s world exploration and colonisation. The architectural concept of European classical design blended with Portuguese and chinese cultural elements aims to reflect Macau.

Which item of furniture do you wish you could take home from the hotel?
I just love the traditional leather chairs in the lobby lounge. it reminds me of a wise old man sitting in his chair smoking a pipe.

Which world hotel has the perfect design?
My favourite urban hotel would have to be the Lindrum Hotel in Melbourne, australia. it’s a small boutique hotel that was transformed from an early 1900s billiards hall. i love its sensitivity to the existing architecture and its subtle approach to design. it’s very sophisticated. Simple, yet elegant.

If you could design a hotel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I’d have to say croatia. Only because i’m of croatian heritage and i’ve heard so much about the adriatic coast and how naturally beautiful the environment is. a boutique resort hotel with croatian influences would be nice.
