Cirque du Soleil will be holding a gala performance of their brand new show Zaia – their first permanent asia-based production – at the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel on 28 august to coincide with the first anniversary of the hotel. The show, which follows a young girl’s voyage of self-discovery as she journeys into space, features all the music, dance, movement and aerial acrobatics that have been wowing cirque du Soleil audiences since 1984.

Montreal-born Gilles Maheu, the man behind Zaia, spent two years producing the story, infusing the play with oriental elements to reflect its first permanent asia base. The show’s 75 performers are recruited from all over the world, with 15 originating from china.

The custom-built theatre at the Venetian accommodates 1,800 and is the biggest ever created by the Quebec-based circus. The uS$150m project involved building a dome-shaped stage 88ft tall and 97ft wide, three suspended rails, three big spiral lifts and 3,000 lights.

Regular performances of Zaia will begin on 29 august and the show will be on every day apart from Mondays. cirque du Soleil plans to set up its second permanent asian theatre at the Tokyo Disneyland later this year.
